Staff at Coventry Building Society have raised a fantastic £2,638.48 for Coventry Cyrenians – a local charity who provide a range of services to homeless and vulnerably housed people in Coventry and Warwickshire – by sleeping outside their head office for the night. 16 members of staff from the Coventry’s Intermediary Development team stayed out for 12 hours from 6pm on Friday 2 June with no phones or other luxuries, braving what was a cold and rainy night.

Chandon Duckett, Business Development Advisor at the Coventry and the organiser of the event, was a finalist at the Coventry and Warwickshire Heroes Awards in May for her hard work in fundraising for the charity. Chandon commented: “We’ve been working with the Coventry Cyrenians since 2015 to help support the vital work they do in our local community. We’ve now raised a total of £23,305.04 for them through a number of fundraising events and donations from our corporate partners”.

“The idea behind the ‘Sleep Out’ was of course to raise money for the Cyrenians, but also to raise awareness  of what it’s like to be homeless. The Cyrenians advised us that the summer months would be a good time for the event, as this time of year sees higher levels of homelessness in Coventry and Warwickshire”.

“We’d like to thank everyone who sponsored us or donated items for the Cyrenians, and those who simply stopped by to say hello. The ‘Sleep Out’ was definitely a challenge and we all left with a better understanding of the important work the Cyrenians do. I think the experience will make our bond with them even stronger”.

Jack Swinburn, Fundraising & Partnerships Manager at Coventry Cyrenians, said “The Coventry’s Intermediary department continue to be such a fantastic supporter of our cause, and the Sleep Out was another event that has raised even more money. It was great that myself and colleagues at Cyrenians were able to join The Coventry employees to experience what many out on the streets in Coventry and across the UK have to face – sleeping rough. We can never say thank you too many times to Chandon and everyone at Coventry Building Society for their continued support, as we continue our mission to end homelessness and helping those we support to rebuild their lives.”
