29th October 2021

On Saturday the 9th of October Cyrenians, St Basils & YMCA, came together as part of the Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 ‘HOME’ festival to host the Coventry Sleepout. Over 70 people slept out all night in the magnificent cathedral ruins, but many more attended either to provide food, entertainment or to support us and watch the bands.

Participants were provided with cardboard (donated by Co-op) to make their own beds/shelters and were invited to play the giant homeless monopoly game run by Warwick University and read the Big Issue information mannequin named ‘Homer’.

Five amazing bands from Musicians Against Homelessness performed live during the evening, these were Alex OHM, Meme Detroit, The Pagans S.O.H., James Reidy and Damien Luke.

Langar Aid served delicious vegetarian food, including curry & samosas, snacks and fruit, and hot drinks to keep people warm.  Macdonald’s (Cross Cheaping) provided enough breakfast for everyone who was still there in the morning (on World Homeless Day), which was very much appreciated after having very little sleep on a hard-stone floor and surviving the rain, feeling very thankful it had to be endured for only one night, unlike too many people who have to survive on the street’s night after night.

Cold drinks were donated by Coventry Gospel Hall Trust & Bookers.

There was a colossal cleaning task in the morning and we were very grateful for the extra helping hands including Warwick Uni Students and members of Coventry’s Good Gym who got up early on the Sunday morning and arrived at 6am to help us.

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who was involved and helped to make the night a great success.

Almost £7000 was raised and will be split equally between the 3 charities, Cyrenians, St Basils & YMCA.
