Cyrenians have recently received a helping hand from NCS Challenge, the National Citizen Service for 15-17 year olds.  It gives young people a chance to increase their confidence and skills and is something to put on their CV and also helps give them more of an insight about university.  They have one week residential, one week living at university and one week supporting a community project. The project is carried out over 4 weeks during the school summer holidays.

Challenge July 16 2During July, 12 young volunteers came to visit Cyrenians.  They spent  the  morning having a look around our charity coffee & retail shop, Windsor’s & Refreshed and one of our hostels for the homeless where they interviewed one of the residents who lived at the property.  They then came to our Head Office and were given a talk by our Housing Support Workers. They spent the afternoon sorting through bags of clothes that had been donated to us.

The volunteers came back on another day to clear out a basement at one of our hostels, which desperately needed doing and then stripped off the wallpaper ready for us to redecorate.

At the end of July the group did lots of activities including a sponsored walk to raise money for Cyrenians, and set up a campaign in Coventry City Centre, called ‘The Power of Three’ to raise awareness of homelessness in Coventry.  They got creative with a large bed sheet and invited people to put their painted handprint and sign their name on it to show their support and a large canvas with a jigsaw of a person on it for people to colour in, it read ‘Together as a community we are piecing together a homeless person’s future’.

The campaign was a great success, they even had a visit from a bear and a storm trooper. At the end of the day the jigsaw piece had been completely coloured in and the handprint bed sheet was full!

Cyrenians would like to say a big thank you to all those who took part.  We are very grateful for all their hard work and the effort they put in, they did a great job.  We are hoping they will be able to send us another group of volunteers next summer too!
