Cyrenians ‘Accelerate’ their way to work

The Accelerate project, a pioneering £3 million initiative to help the most disadvantaged unemployed people find jobs in Coventry and Warwickshire, was launched on 29th November at the Central Hall in Coventry, with Coventry Cyrenians taking an active part.

Funded by the Big Lottery and the European Social Fund, the main aim of Accelerate is to help those furthest from the labour market towards, and into employment, by assisting them to access learning, training and job opportunities, and enabling them to overcome barriers to employment.

Key target groups will include lone parents, those with disabilities, individuals with mental health issues, ex-offenders, people over 50 and people from black and minority ethnic communities.

The project brings together 23 local employability partners to provide each participant with a single access point to confidence building, work experience, and skills enhancement, including training on IT, literacy, numeracy and enterprise.

Each person accessing Accelerate will be assigned a ‘journey guide’ who will be responsible for working with them to design a tailor-made package of support to meet their individual requirements.

Cyrenians are supporting the initiative as a ‘skills enhancer’, providing training in our Windsor’s and Refreshed shop on Far Gosford Street. We will be offering accredited courses in customer service and retail skills along with certified training in food hygiene and manual handling. The training will be linked into a period of volunteering in the shop to demonstrate practical experience of the subject being delivered.

“As the agency that directly provides supported accommodation for single homeless we are well aware that just putting a roof over someone’s head is just part of the solution.  Helping people back into employment is a major part of an often complex jigsaw in helping people become fully independent.  The Accelerate service will definitely enhance the opportunities we offer to people in to help them back into work.”  Mike Fowler (Chief Executive)
