05th October 2021

It is with great sadness that Cyrenians had to announce that their charity café & retail shop, Windsor’s & Refreshed had to close its doors on 17th September 2021.  It had struggled to reprise itself following the pandemic, like many other shops in the area.

Windsor’s & Refreshed was officially opened by Neville Staple (Specials) in 2012, Based on Far Gosford Street in Coventry, it was a unique fair-trade coffee shop, music and vintage/up-cycled fashion outlet.  Windsor’s was named in memory of Coventry Cyrenians colleague and local councilor, Rob Windsor.  Rob was passionate about the work of the charity and championed the cause of poor and vulnerable people in Coventry since the start of his political career during the 1980s which included challenging and helping to abolish the Poll Tax!

The aim of this Cyrenians Social Enterprise project was to give people who had difficulty accessing education and employment, the opportunity to gain work experience, learn transferable skills and build confidence, which subsequently enhanced their employability. This included young people, the homeless, ex-offenders on probation, and ex-service personnel.

Valuable skills learnt included; Barista training, stock management, customer service and till operation.

Several of our own residents staying in our accommodation for the homeless volunteered over the years and continued after we had helped them move into their own homes as they wanted to give something back. Working as a part of a team in the shop made a positive difference to their lives.

It was also a great place for University students to gain work experience as part of their modules.

We would like to thank everyone who supported the project over the years, including volunteers, local Colleges & Universities, local companies and of course all of our customers.

Shop Volunteers Sept 2021

Special thanks go to Jenny Sheridan who managed Windsor’s & Refreshed for   the last 6 years and did a fantastic job along with her remaining volunteers,   (pictured left to right) Paul Hobson, Nicky Phipps & Linda Mason who have   been amazing.  All 3 received the Tracy Kite Award for long-service in 2018-   2019 and they were committed until the very end. It was an emotional last   day for all and they were presented with flowers and vouchers to say thank   you, followed by tea and cakes.

When the shop closed our residents were invited to attend to help themselves to clothes etc.  We donated the remaining items to AGE UK Coventry & Warwickshire.

“We are so grateful for the kind donation of stock from the Coventry Cyrenian’s shop. The quality of the stock is fantastic and as the shop was organised so efficiently we were able to distribute the stock out to the Age UK shops quickly and easily. The income raised within Age UK shops helps to support vital services for older people across Coventry & Warwickshire so it’s fantastic that the Coventry Cyrenians chose to pass on these items to help support another local charity”.
